Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about the conference.

What is the SFA Linguistics Conference?

The SFA Linguistics Conference is organized by Dr. Jessie Sams and is a platform for SFA students to showcase their work. This year's conference includes both a poster session and a presentation session.

Who can submit to present at the conference?

Any SFA student, whether they are undergraduate or graduate. You do not need to be a Linguistics Minor or associated with the Linguistics program to submit.

I have an idea that doesn't fit into the main categories listed for areas of focus for the conference. Can I still submit?

Yes! As long as your work is tied to linguistics, language, and/or media, you can submit to be included in the conference.

How do I submit?

Please read the call for abstracts and use the submission form to submit your abstract for the conference. The deadline for all submission is March 7, 2014.

04

What is the difference between a poster and a presentation?

If you choose to display your work as a poster, you will design and print a professional poster, which will be hung in one area of the conference. Attendees will be able to walk around and speak with you about your work when they look at your poster. If you choose to do a presentation instead, you will prepare a 10-minute presentation and present your work using a PowerPoint or Prezi to attendees. A short question-and-answer session will follow each presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

06

What if I can't choose between the two types of sessions when I'm submitting my abstract?

You can choose to be considered for either. When you are informed of your acceptance, you will also be informed of the session your work was accepted for (poster or presentation).

I'm not quite sure how to write an abstract or design a poster/presentation. Where should I go for help?

While you can find help in many places, there will also be three workshops offered: (1) a workshop on writing abstracts; (2) a workshop on designing professional posters; and (3) a workshop on designing multimedia presentations. The first workshop will be offered before abstracts are due while the second two workshops will be offered after participants have been notified of their acceptance.

Can I submit work I've done in a class?

Of course. The abstract you submit can be for work from a past/present class or for work you've done on your own outside the classroom.

Who do I contact if I have more questions?

Please contact Dr. Jessie Sams (samsj@sfasu.edu).
