Conference information

The second annual SFA Linguistics Conference will be held on May 1, 2014, with a primary theme of Linguistics, Language, and Media. For the purposes of this conference, media will be defined as any instance of mass communication, including (but not limited to) TV programs, movies, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books.

Submissions in the following areas are especially encouraged:

  • language use and genre, context, and/or style

  • representation of key populations and language use in media

  • language use and cultural considerations

While these areas are encouraged, submissions from other areas of linguistic, language, or media studies are welcome.

This year’s conference will have two primary sessions: a poster session and a presentation session, consisting of 10-minute presentations, for which students will have access to a computer and projector.

Call for submissions

Undergraduate and graduate students from across the university are welcome to submit a 250-word abstract of a paper/project for inclusion in the conference. The paper or project can be work from a past/present class or can be work completed outside class.

When submitting, please indicate whether you would like to be included for consideration for the poster session or presentation session (or both).

Use the submission form on this website to submit your abstract by March 7, 2014.

For any interested participants, there will also be workshops prior to the conference to aid participants in designing a professional poster and constructing a professional presentation (including professional PowerPoints and Prezis).
